Thank you for your forum post.

I suspect it is nothing to worry about, as the GUI ->In Progress Tab is slow to update and clear when a job completes. Also it is not an accurate way of checking if a task is still running.

If you close the GUI and re-open after a couple of seconds, is the Failed restore still displayed in the In-Progress tab?

Thank you for your forum post and sorry that you have encountered a problem.

It looks like that the compression components within SQL Backup have failed to decompress the backup file.

If you have a tight deadline to meet and need to get this restored, there is a stand-alone version of the conversion tools available HERE.

Does this occur for every backup file you attempt to restore on this server?

Was the backup file copied from the Production Server to the Dev environment?

You can use the SQL Backup Testing Utilities which can be downloaded using this LINK.

From tools menu there is a file integrity checker and a MD5 hash generator. You ensure that the backup file is OK and if the backup file was copied create a hash code of the original and copied file, if the hashes do not match I suspect the copied file has corrupted.

Hello there,

As i am new to sql server administration, i would like to hear out from you people regarding the possible solution to my query.

will explain in details below.

1)I would like to run a schedule backup every week on a particular day on a particular time.

after the backup happens i want to shrink the log file and again after the log file shrinks

I would like to re-run whole backup once again, all this process should happen on a weekly basis without any human interference. Kindly let me know if this is possible to do on a production server. is there any query to run this?thank you in advance.

Thank you for your forum post.

The Log Shipping Wizard will only allow you to configure log shipping for one database at a time.

On the source side of the log shipping process, you can use the Backup Wizard and generate the Full Backups of each database that you wish to configure Log Shipping for. Next configure a Scheduled backup job to backup the transaction logs of each database.

On the destination side restore each of the full backups with norecovery or with standby using the restore wizard. Followed creating a scheduled restore job for each log restore.

Either way, there is no quick setup of log shipping for multiple databases.

I believe that your requirements can be fulfilled using a combination of SQL backup and editing the SQL Server agent job.

The only thing I am not totally confident in is perfect sychronization of the second backup procedure exactly after the log shrink command. I will do some more research on this.

So, firstly, create a regular, scheduled backup job in the Red gate SQL backup wizard (I'm going to assume you're familiar with this step).

If you have a non-EXPRESS version of SQL Server this will have created a SQL server agent job which you can inspect in SSMS.

Open up the job and look at step 1. You should see the backup job here. Copy the T-SQL and we'll use this in the last step.

The next thins is- Insert a new step that will shrink the log:

DBCC SHRINKFILE (Transact-SQL)

Then create the last step by inserting and copying in the same T-SQL that is in the first step.

thanks Eddie but the status is 0 B processed, with an action of Restore. The green circle is spinning.

I've restarted the GUI a few times.

Is there a way of removikng this status?

Can you please run the following query on the restoring server to ensure that a restore task is actually running:

Code:

USE master GO EXECUTE Master..sqbstatus 1 GO

If no backup or restore task is running, zero results are returned. The entry in the GUI is false. Normally closing and reopening the GUI resolves the problem.

If a set of results are returned, this indicates that there is a restore process running. The results will include database name, login used, process - B = backup and R = restore, type, compression, encryption. The columns of interest are Processed (bytes), Compressed (bytes) and start_date.

If you repeat the query 2 or 3 times does the processed (bytes) value increase?

If the restore process is running, please run the following two queries and save a copy of the results.

This function will provide a debugging trace of the current execution process in the SQL Backup engine.

Executing sqbutility 9997 will return a NULL value and generate a file in the named directory for the corresponding SQL Backup Agent (eg by default, C:\Program files\Red Gate\SQL Backup\%instance%, called "SQBCoreService_bugreport.txt"

You can certainly do that, depending on your hardware capabilities. You might also want to consider replication and AlwaysOn availability groups if you need near real-time duplication.

This was just what I was looking for, was having a hard time figuring out how to setup scheduling. Thanks! A quick question though (I'm a bit new to this, so bear with me), what is the purpose of re-running a backup right after having shrunk down the log file like rafiqahmeds was asking?

Further update to my reply of the 9th May 2014.

The situation described in this forum post is very rare. From my experiences supporting SQL Backup, this problem occurs when manually copying files from one location to another, normally between different physical machines.

If the user does encounter this problem, you can use the SQL Backup Testing Utilities to check the file integrity of the copied file and to generate a MD5 hash of the copied file, generate MD5 hash of the original backup file and compare the hash codes. If there is a mismatch in the MD5 hash code, the copied file is most likely corrupted.

Retry the manual copy process, or use an alternative copying tool.

When I open SQL Backup, I get greeted with lots of red on the timeline because the schedules conflict...

Of course they conflict, I have 80 databases to Log Ship.

Aaaand to make matters worse, when I try to edit a Log Shipping Restore job on the destination server I get yet another error stating I can't modify it because of the wildcard.

So, how do I get rid of the red on the timeline on the destination server because of "schedule conflicts"?

SQL Backup's timeline feature is there to warn you about things like this - because SQL Server does not allow you to run two backups on the same database at the same time, it is telling you that you are going to have problems. But it does not matter how many databases you are backing up. It's about two jobs on the same DB (or it should be).

The solution is to stagger the backups or to do them less frequently. For instance if you are trying to log ship every five minutes and the log backups take ten minutes, the backup jobs can fail.

I am not aware of the editing problem you have described - I am only aware that if you try to edit a job by hand in SSMS, it can break the parser in a way that you can no longer edit the job using SQL Backup.

I was looking at SQL Log Rescue, and wonder which current product performs roughly the same tasks. What I wanted in this particular case is I wanted to look at the logs and find out which user updated many rows of a particular table.

I'm afraid that Red Gate doesn't have an alternative product to recommend. I'm aware of one other 3rd party product in this space from ApexSQL; also, there are some undocumented functions in SQL Server that might help - here are a couple of articles on the web that might be of interest:

ok thanks. I have used the trial version of ApexSQL Log 2014, and it worked really well.

I'm using SQL Backup to backup my databases to an EMC DataDomain server. This server De-Duplicates the data for maximum storage, but only if the backup files are not compressed.

My backup logs look like the data is being compressed even though I have compression = 0. Is this a bug?

Here is part of my backup job log file.
